Evening all
Had a problem with the mini ever since I've owned it. The clutch plunger rattles around making quite a noise. Happens at particular engine revs like it's reverberating.

I've changed the clutch plunger, arm and release bearing in the past and regularly grease the area with graphite based grease.

I'm certain it's the plunger making the noise as when I lift the bonnet I can physically see it rattling around, and put my finger on the large nut at the end to stop it. Also when driving If I ever so slightly press the clutch pedal it stops.

Has anyone else ever encountered this problem, or any way to solve it? The plunger is quite a baggy fit in the clutch cover. I wonder if over time the cover has widened out at the hole?
Thanks for any help

Steve

I had one the same once, the plunger had corroded and worn the bore badly.

You will need to replace the cover and anything else that looks suspect.

The plunger itself isn't corroded, and the old one wasn't much either. However I think a new clutch cover might be next. Is the plunger quite a snug fit in your new one absx2?

How about getting an engineering company, or friend with a large lathe, to bore out the cover and fit something like an Oilite bush? It would last for much longer than bare ali.

Mine is purple, but I have been told that's normal

I have been thinking of a bush, my mind was using maybe a nylon type turned to the correct diameter internally and externally. A cut out would have to made for the lever arm.

However I'm not sure if this is a solution to the problem or a cover up. If it's common that the cover wears around the plunger then it'll be a solution. If it's unique to me then perhaps something else is wrong and needs looking at?

Thank you for the idea of using bronze oilite bushes as the material though, I'd not even thought about that as a possibility.

It may or may not be a common problem, but it's probably on the increase due to dissimilar metal corrosion and the passage of time. Remember that all Minis are long past the design life of any vehicle now.

I thought some more about this and realised that it may even be possible to improve the sealing arrangements and fit a grease nipple (to be used very sparingly every few years).

But the ultimate is a conversion to a modern internal concentric slave cylinder without all the linkage.

We may have to be doing many mods like this to keep the Mini going for the next 50 years.

I've been looking into this some more, through previous threads. A lot has come up about seized clutch plungers. For want of a better word, the fit of my plunger into the cover is baggy. No chance of it getting seized so I now believe the cover hole has in fact enlarged.

I'll purchase a second cover, like the one Carlos posted and investigate the bush idea with new components, so I get to keep the mini on the road in the meantime.

Will keep updates on this page for anyone else having similar problems.
