Thank you for the replies. I realize that it isn't a difficult job but serious health issues prevent me from doing much of anything these days.

Sorry to hear that. I suggest that your garage may not be familiar with Minis. What they quoted is about right for a timing belt on some modern machinery, where access is poor and there is an immense amount of dismantling. On the Mini there is fairly easy access once the radiator is out of the way, and no requirement for any special tools or techniques that every garage does not already have.

Have a look for a decent old skool mechanic in your parts, that quote is extracting the urine.
