OK a couple of years ago I was looking for some tyres and wheels, long story short I ended up with a mixed bag.

Two of the wheels are 5 x 10 Smith UK and whilst trying to find out about wheels and tyres Guess-Works.com said that they are trailer wheels and should not be fitted to a car. The thread is here (excuse the title it was late and I was tyred :proud:  ).

http://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/topic/287029-what-are-these-tyres/?hl=+wheels

I ended up with a set of four genuine Weller 5 x 10's all stamped 4400 6 but have since found that one of them is buckled.

I am trying to locate a spare to replace this wheel but I am having no luck. I have found a pair of 5 x 10 Wellers (I think) but they are stamped 6/82/j1 and 6/82/n1 so I am not sure.

Searching Ebay, Gumtree, Facebook, Forums etc I have located several people selling the same Smith UK wheels as wellers, often in a set of four and I presume that they have been mounted on a car. So back to the original question.

Are these wheels suitable for a Car or Trailer only and if so WHY?

My SMITH UK are stamped the same as the ones in the thread but the manufacture date is different.

H.G. 605

500 x 10 x 11

XX XX (Which is the manufacture date)

The reason I ask is that having just spoken to the MOT fellow at my local garage I can fit different wheels to the rear and front (but not mixed on the same axle). So if I cannot find a Weller 4400 6 I could go for a variation and if the Smiths ARE OK then I don't need to spend any more money (apart from refurbing them)?

I can't see why they couldn't be used on a car. As long as the tyres are ok.

as long as the load rating is OK then no issues in using them. Most steels are OK any way.

but the ET may cause issues.

I have had them on the car to roll the chassis, they sit about the same as the Wellers.

Here in Aust, wheels fitted to Trailers have to be made to the same Standards as those for cars (ADR 23 & ADR 42 as relevant). I would think it the same in the UK, I've had a bit of a look to see if I can find these standards, I think it's buried somewhere in here  http://www.dft.gov.u...pe/trailers.asp

the 500 x 10 x 11 I think I can translate for you;-

500 = load rating in Kg

10   = Rim size (for tyres) in Inches

11   = Hole size for stud in mm

On the face of it, while these may have been manufactured for Trailers, as long as they meet the correct standards, there's no legal reason why they couldn't be fitted to a car. I would suggest however if all these boxes get ticked, to measure the ET (off set) of them as many Trailer specific Wheels have an ET of 0, so you may need to compensate for this elsewhere.

I'm not 100% sure, but I strongly suspect that if these are deemed as Trailer Wheels, it would only be because the ET is 0.

I measured the ET (sort of) using an adjustable Set Square with the wheel facing up on the floor, I measured horizontally the height between the rim to the flat surface of the centre of the wheel. I then transposed this measurement with the wheel on its side from the outside of the rim to the centre line of the wheel.

The Smiths definitely have a positive or negative PCD e.g. the mating surface is not in line with the dead centre of the wheel but they are 10mm less than the Weller. So I think the Wellers will stick out slightly more.

One other thing I have noticed is that even though these wheels are 5.00 x 10 if you measure the distance between the outsides of the rims its about 6 inches and inside the lip where the tyre sits is 5 inches. This is confirmed here.

I have seen some Wellers on Facebook that look like they are stamped 4400 6 and have been advertised as 10 x 6 inch, I suspect though that these are 5 inch?
