Hi,
For the sump plug which I trashed by over tightening, there's M16 x 1.5, M16 x 2, M20 etc etc.
I have no idea which I need, any help appreciated.

5/8'' UNC

As Nick's mentioned, the original Sump Plug is 5/8" UNC. You can get imperial Timeserts, but the only place I found them when I looked was ex-US. I also found them frightfully expensive, circa $200 USD for one insert!
And that's why I made those as shown in that other thread.
Approach an engineering shop to make you one, you may need to supply them with a bolt to work from, but I wouldn't think it would cost more than a couple of bottles of beer.

that company we don't mention do a set.

Yes they do, it doesn't come with a drill bit mind you so £70 is pretty expensive, I may as well get the Wurth kit.
Haha I miss the Ozzie/Kiwi mentality, beer pays for every small job :)
Pics to follow as I need advice on if it's already been tapped, it looks like a bit of a mess.

I'm still a little confused as there's two set's for 5/8 UNC:

Ah thanks that clears it up. Yup that's the one without a drill bit so for a extra £20ish I may as well buy the Wurth kit.
I'm in Leeds, happy to travel.
I've only driven the car about 200 miles before all the issues surfaced, in that time on the road I found it crunches going into 1st gear anything above about 5mph, this is my first Mini, I can't imagine this is normal but I'm not sure how serious it is, if it needs to be reconditioned then it would mean pulling the sump out anyway, then I can just send it to a fabricator for the helicoil job, at least then it'll be square, not something I want to do but if the gear box is cooked then so be it, all other gears are good, it's a '99 MPi.

Loads of people in your neck of the woods will be able to sort that for you, don't go jumping on the expensive option yet.

Mmm I would be measuring the diameter of that hole.
Just to check that the kit will work.
There are a few friends in Leeds that might be able to help out.
Also quite a few people on here in Leeds.
Hard to be bang on with a tape measure but it was definitely between 15-16mm. If you know anyone please let me know how to get in touch, thanks very much.

That'd be brilliant, £100 on a tool I'm only going to use once is a bit rich, please keep a eye out if you know anybody, thanks.

I used one of these helicoil kits for mine. I've had no problems with it.
Did you drill it in-situ?
