This Has To Be A Stolen Mini For Sale...

Responded to an eBay add for a 1961 Morris mini,
What I found was a mid 90's Rover, MPI engine, only 29k on the clock.
Vin plate had been removed from engine bay.
Someone had stuck a sticker on the seat rail that was printed out by a label printer saying "heritage shell" and the number that matches on the V5.
The seller is a used car scrapper/dealer in an industrial estate. He's saying someone must have re shelled it with a heritage shell... I called BS on that!
V5 matches the plates on the car. It has an MOT till next year.
Car is Black, fully de seamed, has centre rear exhaust, 13inch wide alloys, has had rear seat bench cut away.
So I'm thinking, a stolen car on stolen number plates that match a stolen v5? I really want to buy it but I've walked away...
Or am I over thinking this?!

Don't know about stolen, but is certainly a ringer.
I'd walk away too.

Hi,
I would hazard a guess that's not or has ever been a 61. You have to wonder why, if a genuine 61 with mot would be £2k? okay the gutters have "vanished" and no external door hinges etc. I would have walked away also.
If it was on a later (correct plate) I would say great little mini, but dodgy stickers about heritage shell? not for me.

just to be devils advocate it might have been rebuilt into a heritage shell at some time, and then had an MPi engine put into it.
if it has then where are the receipts?
ding dong.

I knew it looked a bit off from the add but I was hoping he just didn't know what he was selling and I was hoping for a deal.
I told him in the end to his face that I thought it was well dogdy and prob stollen at some point. He claimed no knowledge and kept trying to say it had been upgraded.
He locked the gates behind me...!
Also address is wrong on eBay add, it's unit 20, IG11 7BG.
I took photos of the "heritage number" plaque I'll put them up tonight. It's unreal but someone will eventually fall for it.

Lol. Strip it for parts weight the rest in.
There is no proof that it's stolen so where does all this end? In reality who would spend all that cash on a heritage shell then do that to it? I'd be wary of buying anything with seriously major modifications as I can see a time where anything too far from standard gets the chop unless receipts are all kept safe.

A crushed car and a jail sentence may make him think twice before trying to conn people again.
You should report it to Ebay too of course.

I would recommend reporting it to the police. The only way to reduce the impact on all of us from criminal activity is to ensure that it is dealt with properly. You should tell VOSA too, as deseaming is very clearly a modification of the monocoque.

Unfortunately eBay wont be interested.
