I recently lost drive when I was reversing out of my driveway. After a quick inspection, clutch strip and re-build she drove fine for about 15 miles. The same thing happened again but this time I noticed that whilst Iwas not moving, I could still get a perfect readout on the speedo through the full gear range.  I could even select reverse without any issues.

After a quick google inspection I read a thread posted on minifinity about the same symptoms as me and it basically said that if you were getting a readout on the speedo but no drive, it could either be the nut that secured the pinion gear, or a diff problem.

The engine is now attached to stand and the box is on the work bench. There is no 'spare' metal floating around, the nut on the end of the main shaft is still tight and in it's correct place and I have even taken the diff out and it looks perfect.

I am now stuck and wondered if anyone out there has had the same issue and aside from buying a new gearbox, how have you sorted the issue?

Cheers

Mark

Were the output pot joints turning before you took the engine and box out when in drive? What was the problem last time?

Swift_General. Everything was turning as you would expect. I jacked the car up and with someone on the other wheel put her in gear and both turned the wheels in the same direction and we turned the engine. We did feel a clunk like something re-located though.  Looking inside the box, everything is in the right place.

Sledgehammar.  The shafts look good and there are no stripped splines.  Playing with the pot joints they seem fine.  Everything locates inside the rubber boot and there doesn't feel like there is anything floating about inside.

Teeth missing on the differential crownwheel or pinion?
Pinions inside the diff?

If the speedo is working then you have drive to the mainshaft as I'm sure tou're aware. So the issue can only be final drive/diff or driveshafts. You say the pinion is firmly there and the diff looks perfect therefore I'm thinking, like sledgehammer, driveshafts, hence the reason I was asking if the output pots were turning when in drive. I recently had a driveshaft come out of the outer CV, due to an issue with the circlip on the end. So the driveshaft was turning, but the CV wasn't.

The outer CVs are fine however you have got me thinking and I did replace an oil seal on one of the pot joints and I'm now thinking that the driveshaft didn't locate properly which would explain the clunk I described above and the loss of drive.

Thanks for brainstorming for me guys. Time to put it all back together.

You will not be the first person to lose drive due to a pot joint not being engaged properly. I have seem it happen on a Princess due to very loose engine mounts which forcibly disengaged it, and on several other vehicles. Sometimes they spill oil, but drive is usually lost before that point.

It is always advisable to fit a new locking clip, and ensure, by pulling the pot, that the clip has engaged.

But it is good that it is an easy fix. Could have been a broken diff...
