My brake disc shield has broken so I was setting about getting the rattly remains off when i encountered a problem
The shield secures to the track rod end but as I started to undo the nylock nut the whole knuckle started turning. Now I'm left with the nut half off and stuck to the knuckle.
Should the knuckle be able to turn like that? Any ideas on how I can solve this?
Thanks
Could I pull the knuckle out of the cup, to grip it so i could get the nut off?

u got any gap what so ever were you can crab the threaded part like the other side if not, id say pop it and replace it, i always get paranoid of that happening with ball joints, happened onge but we only needed the other bit of it so we haked the joint off and replaced it, only other things i could think is order a new track rod end then drill that one out, or make a flat head slot for a driver then stick a driver in it then use a spanner, but then would recomend a new track rod end again

Apply lots of heat, Then try working it bakc and forth tightening a little, loosening a little, etc etc, occasionally spraying WD40 or PlusGas on it. it might work loose eventually.
Use a good releasing agent such as PlusGas.
if all else fails, Grind it. I've had to grind one off in the past.
Don't reach for the FBH (F*ckin big hammer)

I don't think heat or releasing agent will work to be honest, the knuckle seems pretty lose in the cup. It needs gripping. Infortunatley there's not enough room to get moles in there Dammit why do these things happen on Sundays when the shops are shut?!

try putting a jack under the track rod end, this will push it back in allowing you to take the nut off.
you will have to crack it off again though

I've personally never been a fan of the MG, but i sure like my FBH.
I have experienced the same problem, I cut and filed the nyloc nut off, took a while.
Before removing nuts i usually work them up and down the threads to make sure the new one go's on cleanly and minimise the risk of cross-threading.

This is quite normal, and the solution is as above. Use a trolley jack under the knuckle cup to press the pin up into the steering arm more tightly. You don't need to lift it all the hard, just so that it's bearing against the force of the suspension spring. Make sure that the axle stands are well in place and don't go crazy on the nut as the car will be a little less stable on the stands with the jack in this position. And make sure you don't dent the cap on the rear of the track rod end, this will make it useless.
