You can buy a plate that will let you fit Mk1 lights to a newer mini but I was wondering if it would pass its MOT without a reverse light?

A reversing lamp is not part of an MOT

would it be as simple as buying the Mk1 lights and the backplate to fit them on then just plugging them in to where the old lights went?

Yeah, there are conversion plates, which fit over the square holes, and you weld them on. Then you just get the actual mk1 light clusters and they bolt on...

Not hard as such, but you do need to weld...

I would not call welding the plates in 'Simple'

Heres a photo of a 1997 car that I saw at MM2004

Yeah that's right, not simply a plug in replacement. The plates need flush welding into the rear panel and then the rear end needs a respray. Bodyshop work really, unless you can weld. Bit of electrical re-arranging to do, but that's easy enough. Reverse lamp is not testable, but if you want one it is quite easy to hang one underneath opposite the fog lamp. Get a couple of period lamps, one with a red lens and one clear, so that they match the mk1 clusters and it'll look pucker.

This is Icemans mini just after the plates have been seam welded in , you need a thin skim of filler to bring the profile back and fill in any imperfections in the surface before spraying . the wires have differant conecters on , the later cars have block conecters , these will need sniping off and "bullet" conecters crimping on .

thanks woody, thats what I was wanting to know. My dad would be able to weld them on and smooth them out because he's been restoring classic cars for around 20 years and he's helping me out on the mini which he will be respraying as well.
Thanks for the help everybody
