Right.. The mini has two adjusters for the front drums. How do I know if I'm to adjust the lower or the upper one?

The car is pulling left when braking (Too little brake force on front right wheel), I have excessive pedal travel and the rears lock up before the front.. Time for a thorough adjustment..

I know that the wheels should not spin freely - but how can I know if I need to adjust the upper or the lower adjusters?

Sounds like you have some fluid leaks and some serious brake issues, I suggest you buy a manual.

No leaks, and it might sound worse than it really is..

You adjust ALL the adjusters, and tighten ONLY in the direction of normal wheel rotation, ie anticlockwise on the right wheel, clockwise on the left, as viewed from behind the wheel looking at the backplate. Turn the other way and bad things happen, because the shoe is pushed off centre and rubs without taking up free play.

You spin the wheel forwards and nip up one adjuster at a time till it just becomes stiff and back off slightly. Easy as that. And each shoe is independent so adjusting one does not mess up the setting of the other.

Not so at the back, you only have one adjuster which should be nipped up tight and backed off in 1/4 turn clicks until the wheel spins nearly freely.

Jack the car up so the wheel is off the ground. Get the shoes adjusted up so that you can feel/hear some resistance. Not hard once you get a feel for it.

Check that your adjusters do not self adjust.

We had a car a while back, which as you drove along the adjuster on the front would wobble and de-adjust.

Worth checking whilst you adjust them.
