What Happens When You Reach The Rev Limit Of Your A-Series?

What happens when you rev your mini engine to it's limit?
This may seem like a stupid question but I have been considering the future build of my new mini project. When I had my last mini, a 998 with 12g940 head and 266 cam it would lean out like crazy at about 5-5500rpm. It now occurs to me that perhaps this was not a carb/tuning issue, rather just the engine running out of puff?
Does that line up with other people's knowledge experience? Particularly those who have dyno'd their cars and know where their power curve tales off.
Cheers

My dads slalom race Mini has its peak Power at 7220 rpm, rev limiter was at 8.5k and it has been hit quite q few Times.

That sounds more like a tuning problem or the fuel pump has reached it's peak. Assuming it is built correctly and has the appropriate valve springs etc you should be able to do more revs than that safely..

I was running an HIF44 at the time.
I just thought it would be worth getting feedback on as perhaps I was just expecting too much from the 266, but it really seemed like a well behaved cam profile

If its a mechanical fuel pump it shouldnt be an issue at those revs, mine runs 110 ATF with one. Valve bounce and a tailing off of power when your past the cams powerband.

poor set up.
sounds like wrong needle.
what limits the max RPM is generally valve train bounce this varies with cams and springs used.

you will get valve bounce.
