Forces more air to go over and around the car which are smoother surfaces than underneath the car. Believe it or not it's more aerodynamic than not having one.What's the benefit?

And thanks mini 30. I'm also of the understanding that is I add a lip to the front and make it strong enough then it may create a little downforce too
It will act as a splitter so it will force air to go under or over the dam, rather than the air becoming turbulent on the leading edge. A good addition to this i would say. Look up Andy Wallers mini for how an air dam in lovely carbon fibre looks.
