Has anyone relocated/hidden their side repeaters?  My car is a 92 so must have them but with a mk1 grille etc they kind of look a bit wrong.

Many modern cars have them in the mirrors and i'm wondering if you could mount something small and LED into the bottom of the mirror which is basically invisible.

The MOT rules state:

Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986 must be fitted with one side repeater indicator on each side.   Instead of a separate lamp, the side repeater might be part of the front direction indicator if it includes a wraparound lens.

Lamps incorporating a side repeater are marked either with an ‘E’ mark in a circle or an ‘e’ mark in a rectangle above which is a number 5.

However, some vehicles are fitted with a wraparound lens with no European approval markings. These can be tested by standing approximately 1000mm to the side of the vehicle’s rear bumper with the indicator on. If amber light can be seen coming through the front lens (not a reflection) this is acceptable.

The main issue here is the fact they must be E marked.  But i'm not sure how many MOT testers would actually check that.

Any ideas?

nothing there says they must be E marked.

only ones where the front repeaters provide the side repeater function.

any that you fit to replace your current ones must fulfill the test requirments

A. Flashing Type

1.  Check the presence, security and operation of the selector switch.

2.  Operate the left and right direction indicators in turn and check:

a. the driver’s ‘tell tale’ warning device for presence and operation

b. that the minimum number of direction indicators are securely fitted

Note:  The precise position of direction indicators is not part of the inspection, but check visually that the lamps are at about the same height and the same distance from each side of the vehicle.

c. they are in good working order

Note: At least 50% of light sources in a lamp must illuminate and at least 50% of a lamp must be visible from the front, rear or side as appropriate

d. that every direction indicator emits amber light (except vehicles first used before 1 September 1965)

e. the flashing rate f.  they are not adversely affected by the operation of any other lamp.

Note:  It may be necessary to run the engine when checking the flashing rate

g.
the flashing rate

Note: It may be necessary to run the engine when checking the flashing rate.

h.
they are not adversely affected by the operation of any other lamp.

Interesting thread - I was actually looking at these recently : http://www.carbuilde...r-side-repeater with an idea to let them into the back of the standard Rover door mirror somehow. More in addition to the standard side repeaters though, rather than as a replacement for.

Thought it might improve visibility of my intentions for other road users, although most days I feel like the only person on the road who's actually using indicators as they're intended ....  <_<

My current idea is to cut a slot in the underside of the mirror and insert a flat piece of frosted perspex that protudes a couple of millimeters and light it with leds.

will need to be more that frosted it will need cutting so as to provide illumination in the correct direction.

a triangular cross section would be better as the light could be refracted in a directed area.

check the regs.

Interesting thread but did you know that if you have LED bulbs in the indicators your flasher relay won't work. Normal bulbs act as a resistance and that's what controls the flash rate etc. Found this out last week when I put LED bulbs in the front indicators. Had to buy an LED flasher relay. Works a treat now.

Good point.  I guess i could put a chamfer on each side (think house roof).

There is also resisters that you can add in line - I've had to use them on a motorbike before now on a hazard kit I installed... r&g produced them iirc but you can get cheaper ones online.

They had bullet connectors on each side so was plug and play.

Why not fit mirrors with repeaters and probably heating, fold flat (almost) and remote control (most useful on the passenger side) from a modern car. They will already be E marked.

Just get a good looking pair and show us some pictures!

Do you know of any? Anything 'modern' would be huge on a mini and I doubt they'd fit in with the mk1 look.
