That last point is true for Volkswagens in general isn't it? I've noticed my mk4 Golf feels incredibly solid with the only thing clonking about is whatever I have in the boot at the time!

Good point about the hatch and fifth gear. Had forgotten about that! Even this tatty 139,000 miler feels very solid as you say. The doors clunk very satisfyingly.

The pricely sum of £400 its petrol 1.8 duratec so havent got the dreaded dual mass flywheel and clutch that the diesels have. Had a look at the MOT history, and it was pretty clean nothing untoward. So hoping to get many miles out of it. Got automatic lights, wipers, electric seats, cruise control, sony 6 disc changer etc etc

There is a reason why its £400. 1.8 duratec engines are notorious for imploding throttle bodies, piston rings that fail and eat the cylinders and excessive oil consumption that screws up every possible sensor it can along with the EGR valve.

If you manage to crack more than 100k miles before you start having issues then you are doing well.

You will also have to contend with shock absorbers that fail with surprisingly few miles on them, springs that shatter, none functioning handbrakes and central locking and alarm systems that go nuts and do stupid stuff like put all 4 windows down on you when you are doing 70 on the motorway and then won't come back up again until you have turned the car off.

Sorry to sound so negative by my family has been burnt by second hand Mondeos. Mine was the worst car I have ever owned.

My advice is sell now while its still working and find something better.
