Good Evening All,

Great to be here, I have just registered to the forum, I’ve search it several times in the past few months and had some great advice, now I’m finally posting!

I bought my son 17 year old a 1980 998 mini, which was a 70% finished project, I have been working on for the past few months. After many, many late nights, the car is through the MOT but the clutch is still causing me a problem.

If you pump it works, so you would think it just needs bleeding. However once bleed it works as it should for an hour or so, then we are back to pumping…..So I’m think there must be air getting in somewhere, I’m no expert I would like to add, but learnt a bit over the past few months.

Parts replaced so far.

Complete new clutch kit fitted, master and slave cylinder replaced, clutch arm replaced, spring.

I haven’t replaced all the parts because of the need to pump the clutch, but this is where I am.

Not replaced the hose between the master and slave cylinder yet, there are defiantly no signs of any leakage. It’s the old push rod.

Thoughts are now, look at the slave cylinder again, it’s new but not original. Push rod?

Finding it really frustrating, as everything else has gone really well, including the conversation from drum to disk I have just done.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome

I've had this problem on various cars and have usually sorted it using an Easy-bleed rather than the old pedal pumping method.

Thanks for your reply, I have tried several methods of bleeding, good old pumping the clutch, I also borrowed a friend homemade pressure bleeding kit, attached it to the master cylinder pressurised, and bled it that way, to be fair, that was the best method and gave the most, but shortly after we are back to pumping..

I had this happen too, the final fix was a new slave cylinder. I still do not understand how it could get air in it and not leak fluid out, but that's what it did.

 

The slave I replaced was only a few months old.....I hope yours turn out to be as simple.

Thanks Magneto, kind of what i was thinking, I'm just going to have to go around the parts alreay replaced.....Taking a best guess at what to replace again first!

You don't mention anywhere about setting up the gap on the adjuster bolt. What did you set it to?

When i set the clutch up i just followed the manual, but if it was an adjustment, why would it stop working normally and have to pump it. Then once bled again it works for a short period of time, then back to pumping. It must be air getting in, i think...As i said i'm no expert but in my mind i wouldn't think it couldn't come in and out of adjustment. In saying that i'm here to take advice by people who know a lot more than me which isn't much  .
