hi guys, after finally getting my front end on my mpi replaced and ready for spraying i have found some pretty nasty rust at the rear..

i know that the later coopers are very bad at rusting for some reason and i have found that the rot has eaten into the boot floor and the boot hinge panel and also the rear valance.
i have found the panels i will need for replacement but it seems like a very big job for myself to undertake..

would it really be such a hard job, i just dont want to go hacking at my mini, i dont mind replacing whole panels like wings etc.. but the boot hinge repair is only the bottom part of the whole rear panel.
im quite dissapointed that after all the money and hard work iv put into it iv now discovered this.

iv weighed up the option of a whole new shell but it would not be cost effective to do so, or has anyone got a minus shell going????
any ideas on what to do????

On such a new car that's worth alot of cash i'd do it properly and replace the whole of the rear panel and the boot floor - especially if the car needs a respray anyway.

The rear panel shouldn't be too much of a problem but I can see the boot floor being a bit of a hastle. You will need to remove the petrol tank, battery etc and drop or remove the subframe.

I bet it will turn out to be a bigger job than it looks - i've got a 1997 cooper mpi and one weekend I decided to replace the radius arms. It's now been off the road the whole summer as I found the subframe needed replacing, brake pipes, shocks and added Hi-Lo's whilst I was there. Also undersealed it all before putting the subframe back. Little jobs lead to other little jobs and others etc!

I would say it should be a DIY job. The only prob is the welding and it depends on how long you are prepared for the car to be off the road for.

Out of interest how much did it cost to get the front end done?
