I think my minis engine is starting to get tired now, its a standard 998 with 115000 miles on the clock.

Car has been going really well up till now, but im thinking of pulling the engine out this winter and sorting some bits and pieces.

Recently ive been having some major issues. I've noticed that the car has been going through a hell of a lot of oil compared to usual, and tonight i found that oil is coming up through the dipstick hole!

The engine has now started to missfire constantly on idle and whilst out driving, 3 of the plugs are a good colour but one is really quite oily - is this suggesting a broken piston ring do you think?

Also when the engine is idling, along with oil coming up through the dipstick hole, im getting what looks like smoke coming out of the oil filler cap.

Before any of these major issues happened, you would occasionally get the odd bit of blue smoke under hard acceleration, but just a small amount not clouds or anything like that.

I was just wondering roughly what could be wrong here so i have an idea of what im going to have to do to it. I personally suspect i have issues with the piston rings, but why would i be getting such a high pressure for it to fire oil up through the dipstick? And the missfire also?

Any help is much appreciated, i do realise the high mileage of the engine so i do expect to be doing a fair bit of maintenance to it.

Cheers

Given the mileage and the symptoms, it's pretty worn and a full rebuild / overhaul would work wonders.

I would also suggest while it's out doing the Gearbox, clutch, radiator, carb - in other words the lot, then it'll go for another 100 000 without too much trouble.

more than likely going to be something like the rings gone, might be worth a check of any breathers you have aswell to ensure they are not blocked, worth doing even if it is rings because it could be an underlying issue.
