I have read all the previous posts about fitting an rvi smiths tacho to my 1992 mayfair and have tried running two new cables from the -terminal on the coil and from the cable coming from the body of the distributor directly to the two white cables on the back of the rev counter (I have disconnected the original black and white wires from the coil and distributor), the earth is connected as well as the ignition feed. When I did this the car would not start, what am I doing wrong?

Andy.

This is probably a better way to connect it;-

You probably have an electronic distributor, maybe a 65dm4, and an RVI Tacho won't work properly. Like me you more than likely need a RVC tachometer. My engine is a 92 1275.

I have looked at the speedy cables Web site and it only shows one wire coming from the - coil terminal but my tacho pulse sensor needs two wires going to it as it has two connectors that have been used before.

Can you post up a picture of the back of your tacho showing the connectors?

Thanks Moke spider but do I not need two wires to connect to the loops pair of connectors o the back of the tacho?

There's both the RVI and RVC Type Tachos on Chris's web site. They are the only types that I know of Smith's did.

I'm sorry here, but not really understanding your reply too clear.

If it's an RVI, you can connect it one of two ways, Chris's page shows the simplest way, if wiring in from scratch.

An alternative way is to bring two wires up from the distributor and connect them as a 'loop' through the sensor on the back of the Tacho. Disconnect the wire that goes from the distributor to the coil, run a wire from the -ve of the coil, up to the tacho sensor, then from the other side of the tacho sensor, back the the points wire of the distributor.

Is your Tacho an Older type that you need to make your own loop of wire on the back of, or a newer type that just has two spades on the back for the sensor? Put another way, the older ones only had + & - spades and the later ones ones have 2 spades and 2 bullet connectors.

I think the pulse loop takes the place of the 12v feed to the coil, so ignition live through pulse loop and then connected to + on coil and 12v - terminal on the tach to earth.

This one's off a Datsun

You can connect as per Planky's photo that he kindly posted up (and would be the simplest) of the 'loop wire' you could 'cut in to' the wire between the Distributor (points) and the Coil.

I did a lot of digging when I bought this bargain 2" tacho off eBay for my camper

After a LOT of faffing about and digging it turned out I only needed to connect two wires out of the six or so that were hanging out of the back of the gauge :shy:  Still haven't got the illumination sorted out yet  ;D
