I thought it might be interesting to start a new thread relating to the exploits of Guy Martin.

His personal qualities, public appearances and generally what he's been up to.

I think that anyone involved with Minis probably shares Guy's love of 'proper' engineering and speed.

Did you know he set off on Sunday to attempt the British round the coast cycling record?

 4,802 miles  in 20 days.

In his normal manner there was no press to see him off, he had little or no preparation and is probably wearing borrowed trousers. On top of that, this is hardly the best time of year for such a venture.

So watch out for him - he might be coming past your house.

Current location somewhere in Scotland but if anyone knows more please share.

Richard

I love Guy Martin's down to earth approach to everything he does, and his genuine interest in peoples good old fashioned skills and pride in their work.

The guy seems genuinely nice, salt of earth and calls a spade a spade. Enjoyed Our Guy in China over the past few weeks too.

Yes he makes a really good travelogue presenter. Total opposite of Joanna Lumley for example.

He gets stuck in with people and this gets him past the obstacles of language and celebrity.

If you watch the film 'Closer to the edge' you see him in hospital after that fireball accident.

Sitting up and drinking tea saying hes not bothered!

I think his sense of humour in adversity is one of his key qualities.

I like Guy, but I cant see him pulling off the round the coast in that time frame,

hes a good cyclist and knows how to deal with the pain, but 240 miles a day is a lot to ask , thats in the order of 14-15 hrs a day on the bike. more if the dopey sod uses his single speed again... LOL

Yes I'd like to know what bike he's chosen for this trip.

I noticed in China he used clip-ons which I was a bit surprised at.

I saw a youtube vid of him at the Orange bike factory in Halifax. He certainly does understand the tech. of bikes and was even pretty good at TIG welding aluminium. I guess he should know a thing or two about gearing after assembling his own race engines then lapping at 132mph average.

Yep I reckon he'll make it.
He'll be passing near to where I live so if I get a chance I might try and turn out to cheer him on. Should be about Dec 22nd.
Still can't find any info on his progress but if I do I'll post it on here.

I read his Autobiography and really enjoyed it, well worth a read.

Love the TV programmes

Proper working class hero and so down to earth, respect!

Good luck Guy

I also have his autobiography but I haven't read it yet (only had it since my birthday in February)

Im a big fan of his, I hope he breaks the record too, but avg 250 miles a day is a tall order....

Would like to find a timetable/itinerary for when he's around near me in the North West, most likely have to pay my sister a visit in Blackpool if he gets round that way....
