    Starting My Mini Up

Hi Everyone!!

My name is Alex and I am brand new to the Mini forum. I don't own a mini at the moment but I have recently acquired a garage so now have the space to potentially own one as weekend car. I am a complete novice to vehicle mechanics so I would like to buy one to learn and build up those skills of servicing, maintaining and modifying a classic car.

What drew me to minis are they're size, they're simplicity as well as the availability of spares and replacement/upgrade parts.

Is there anyone who can give me some buying advice for a complete beginner. What are the main things to look for in terms of bodywork, where are the most common areas for rust to occur, what problems should I look out for with the mechanicals and suspension and where are the best sources for the sales of minis??

My budget can stretch to £4000 and I would be looking to buy one that is over 25 years old so that I can apply for classic car insurance (unless there is an insurer that someone could recommend that allows for classic policies on 90s minis), running on carbs for simplicity and a non cooper because they are cheaper and I prefer the cleaner/simpler look of these minis. I am not too worried which engine it comes with, a 998 would be fine, a 1275 would be an added bonus, but would like to have one with a manual transmission.

I am very keen to get into the 'classic car' hobby, but at the same time don't want to into something that is beyond my skills or funds for repair. Any help or advice as well as experiences would be very much appreciated!!!

Many Thanks and Regards.

Alex.
