Hi folks

Opinions please - take a look at the photos and let me know what you think I should do with my sills.

Both are similar condition. both have a lot of surface rust but other than flaky paint and underseal, everything seems solid. My initial reaction is to wire brush the hell out of them, then apply zinc primer to bare metal, followed by paint / stonechip / more paint etc.

however, what if the inside is as bad as the outside? given that its dry in there (car has been dry stored for years) will cavity wax do anything for me or would that be a waste of money?

not really sure how to proceed with this one, but I am on a low budget and just want a car to use rather than a pristine show car. Your opinions would be appreciated. thanks :)

Oh yes, we need some photos... apologies for the rubbish pics, they are taken from the heel board looking forwards on the drivers side...

I would bet that the inner sills are as rusty even if they are solid so the obvious choice for me would be to remove those outer sills and clean up the inners whilst they can still be cleaned up and then fit new outers.

If things are tight and you can't run to that, then cleaning them up and painting them would be better than nothing although wax on top of rusty metal will offer no protection

Cheers

Ben

Thanks folks, you are a helpful lot :D

I'd rather do it now while its 'easier' than do a heck of a lot more in a couple of years time. So will look into sill replacement

i'm just reading through the "how to install inner and outer sills" sticky thread.

Do i need all the bracing if i am just removing outers? Thanks all

No. But do them one side at a time.

If its just the outer sill no bracing needed. However if you do a full inner sill then thats a different ballgame.

I wrote the sticky so the inner sill replacement is a big job to do but still very achievable
