I've got a couple of spare turbos (one of which I know works well, the other of which is an unknown). Also got a brand new one ready to go onto my rebuilt Metro Turbo. Anyone fancy offering advice on turbo overhaul?
I want to coat the exhaust turbine housing with a ceramic - there are a couple of companies that can do this for me - the reason is to keep heat inside the turbo, and reduce engine bay temperatures. Problem is that this would involve separating the turbo housing and this is something I've never done before.
I want to put the brand new turbo onto my car, but I definitely don't want to start messing about with a new unit. I'm thinking, maybe, about dismantling the "unknown" one, giving it an overhaul and replacing bearings etc and sending off the turbine housing for ceramic coating.
I'm a fairly competent mechanic, and probably have many/most of the tools needed for the job. Just never done it before, and given the way the turbo operates I guess the tolerances will be utterly critical. Should I attempt an overhaul, or is it best left to experts?
Cheers!
Dan.

personally i'd say dont bother.. unless you know how to balance the shaft... i think you can get away with replacing bearings without rebalancing..but coating it in ceramic will mess up the balance..
i might be wrong, its just a thought.

Thanks Dave. Yeah, I learned that I'd need to balance the shaft, though I've heard I can get that done for around £45.
Even so, I'd only be coating the housing (on the exhaust side) with ceramic - not the internals. You reckon I might yet be able to get away with it without rebalancing the shaft? Or would coating the housing still mess up the balancing?

Ahhhh, just the housing. From what i remember, if the shaft isnt scored and its just the bearings that are pooped.. you should get away wiith it yes.
Theres only one way to find out, eh?

Just take ur time, and all that.
