Hello all!

I have a mini 7, R reg, lovely little car.
Had it for over 2 years with no problems, until recently!

What is happening is, when on a long ish journey (say on dual carriage way) where you are in 4th going steady away, until you need to come off the dual carriage way to say a roundabout or traffic lights.

Pressing the brake to slow down but it doesn't feel like I'm doing so, for a while, almost feels like the car is driving itself.
Then we eventually slow enough to change down and the over revving starts!
So much so, when we actually stop, the revving is so much so it sounds like it's going to blow up!
Have to turn off engine and re start, which it's fine after that!!!

There is a little bit of clunking going on when changing gears, not alot and only occasional.

Can anyone help?

Am starting to feel less confident in driving her and am a tad worried that one day I won't stop at traffic lights etc...

My dad has had a look at the accelerator cable and 'loobed' it, but so far that's it.

Many thanks!

Unforunately the last thing you want to do is put any kind of lube/grease/oil on the accelerator cable, as it atract's dust and grime and will only compound the problem..

Simplest and probably most cost effective solution is to replace the cable with a new on...

Also, injection or carb ?

Hatter (95 Spi) had this problem, it was to do with the stepper motor in the carb, I had to keep getting out and pushing down a little plunger to get the revs down. Changed the unit to fix it eventually.

Spring that brings the accelerator pedal back up missing? Believe it is known as the accelerator return spring.

Hello all,

Thanks for the replies.

It's an injection, will that make a diff??

Unfortunatley I'm rather naive when it comes to cars!!

according to my info the "mini classic seven" was not called this until April 2000.

between august 1996 and April 2000, all non cooper minis were just called "mini". Anyway, it should be a 1275cc MPI.

my 91 cooper carb has this problem but only in the winter months, on those cold frosty German mornings, in the spring, summer and autumn its fine...sometimes when i change gear the revs go up to 7000..was pretty worrying too!

i thought it was the throttle cable...got it changed this spring! so i need to wait and see for this winter...

I have used dry graphite with great success!! Just pull the cable out of the guide, put the nozzle of the graphite in the guide, give it a few puffs and bobs your uncle!

I had a similar problem, I replaced the whole spi system to be honest as linkage was worn, works a treat now

Around £700 that cost though
