I had a mate who was a bit of a plonker when it came car maintenance, went round his house one day and caught him topping up the oil through the dipstick hole on his Mk1 Escort using a fairy liquid bottle.

If we're on oil top up stories. A chap I know who had just bought his first classic rang me up after deciding to do a few checks on the engine the evening before. 'I topped up the radiator with anti-freeze' he said proudly, 'and also added some oil with the correct grade - but when I came out this morning there was a big pool of oil on the garage floor. what have I done wrong?'
'Did you spill any' I asked
'Dont think so' he said
'Can you see where it's coming from?'
'Cant get underneath there's so much oil'
How much oil did you put in?'
'Not sure but I made sure it was filled to the bottom of the filler tube like I did with the radiator'
After a deep breath I advised him to get a BIG bowl, drain it all out and start again and explained what the dipstick was for - luckily he hadn't tried to start it

I pointed out that cars required the oil changing periodically along with various filters on the car. It turns out she had done about 90k miles and not once checked her oil or had the car serviced.

A mates mum once said to me she didn't understand why I had bought oil when surely they put the oil in when it left the factory.

My brother in law did the big ends on his fiesta by running it low on oil. It turned out it was leaking because the oil filter was rotten as he'd never had it serviced. He didn't know the difference between an mot and a service.

I know a lot of people who get there car serviced before an mot thinking that it will pass because of the service!!!
It really is like banging your head against a brick wall.
How do some people get through life

Well,,,,,, we're not all mechanics,,,,,
Not everyone understands all this stuff and in many ways, I empathise with them.
eg we all have computers of one type or another - yeah?
How many of us know how to re-grease the bearings of the fan on the CPU? Or swap out the HDD?

I'm certainly not a mechanic but road users should be performing basic maintenance.
