Hi,still not got round to installing the centre speedo conversion yet,but I read that the top padded rail has to be removed to fit one, with the binnacle is this correct..I seen some pics with dash rail fitted so unsure if this info is correct.
Cheers all.

Not 100% sure but my mini has the single centre speedo as standard as only has the basic top rail, not padded.

I removed my top dash when I fitted my centre dash.

The Mk.2 has a padded top dash rail and a centre speedo binnacle.

The centre speedo physically fits with the padded dash rail. But you struggle to read it.

So that's the reason its usually removed, but would be ok in a dashboard setup.

You can get after market wooden dashes that allow you to fit the centre speedo with the Rover dash rail. It moves the speedo outwards so that you can read it. In my opinion (but I'm well known as having no taste) even if you could read the dual, the standard centre clock setup looks odd with just the padded dash rail - they just don't look like they are meant to go together.

I've got a 91 Mayfair and junked the driver-inline 3 clock + fitted the MINI CENTRE 3 clock binnicle.

I fitted mine by using the binnacle holes ...9 oclock + 3 oclock drilled thru the bulkhead and used thin threaded coach bolts and pushed thru the binnacle holes...fitted plastic pipe between binnicle and bulkhead and nuts and washer on engine bay side.

This way you can alter the depth the binnacle sits from the bottom dash rail and so you can see the 30 MPH marker while driving...without craning your neck. :D

I just loosened the top dash rail bolts, slid the binnacle in rough postiton then tightened the dash rail bolts back up.

Also junked the bulkhead plate that the harness passes thru (I can now change the bulbs etc in the dash without moving the binnacle.

Attached File  20160422_154101.jpg   46.66K   9 downloads91Mayfair with new (old) Mini 3 clock binnacle, without removing  top dash rail (just loosen TDR bolts)

You can see the bit of top dash rail that I cut(vinyl) before figuring I could just loosen the 3 bolts and wangle the binnacle in position.
