How does everyone set their gap on their rockers and valve clearances? I understand the method in the haynes, but its bloody tough turning the engine over by hand! Engine turned very free before i put the rockers on, so theres nothing wrong with it.

Haynes suggests pushing the car back and forward, thats seriously hard work and almost impossible!

And tips would be greatfully received.

Plugs are out.

It's a relatively bare build at the moment, Jack up one side, and apply force to it, and the other side try to turn and the whole she'll moves. Even with handbrake applied. I've got the wheels on bits of 8x3 just so I can crawl under it, I might take it off them to see if the concrete gives more grip. The double valve Springs will be making it tougher I assume.

In my mind at the time 1st was the logical gear. Thinking about it now 4th is much better. That's why you use a higher gear when your trying to bump start something!

Yep, the mechanical advantage is going the other way if your turning the engine with the wheels. In 1st the engine will do about 10 turns to one of the wheels, 3ish in fourth.

You can check at least half the valves without turning it:

 1  3  4  2

 P C  I  E

E P  C  I

 I  E  P C

C  I   E P

Say 1's on power (both valves closed), 4's on induction (exhaust valve closed) and 2's on exhaust (inlet valve closed). One full turn of the crank and you can check the remaining four valves.
