I was driving the other day and all of a sudden it backfired several times in a row and cut out.

there was spark and fuel, rest the points gap and timing. it then ran smoothly for about an hour after the valve clearances, mixture and timing were all properly set up.

however the engine then cut out again later that night. it is a 1990 mini flame with freshly built 998 and only done 600 miles.

any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Sounds like a bad condenser in distributor: breaking down when warm.

Just saying.

It does sound exactly like those symptoms. A new condenser would be my next move too.
