My Megane continues to be the most unreliable car I have ever own. The battery and stop lights have started flashing, although it will run for short periods they don't come on at all. I can't tell whether the battery is not charging at all or whether its on a reduced charge as my multi meter has also died but the battery gave out yesterday but I have managed to charge it up over night to get the car running again.

I'm assuming its the alternator but as it is intermittent is there any possibility its a poor earth/loose connection? I'm cutting my losses and getting rid of it but ideally I need to keep it running for another couple of weeks while I sort out a new car and I'd don't want to fork out for a new alternator to fixed.

As I'm just doing short runs to the train station, would I be ok charging it up over night to keep it on the road?

Have you tried connecting a jump lead from -ve battery terminal to engine block. Then try engine block to body.
