Hi Everyone,

When I'm driving my classic mini sprite 1990 1.3 injection semi auto. Sometimes when it automatically changes gear or when it's in manual. It makes a clunk noise when changing up or down. Also when using the kickback is it? As in pressing hard on the peddle which changes down a gear to speed up makes a clunk loudly.

Also when I tryed to put it on the ramp yesterday it wouldn't drive up it it was fairly steep tho.

Could this be clutch slip? Which involves it being readjusted or is it's the clutch or gearbox?

Spoke to manny garages and they don't seem to be helpful :(. I use the vehicle for raising money for charity and i don't want to sell it. Please help Matt

What oil should I use in an automatic?

20/50 mineral oil, valvoline VR1 is what seems to be recommended, I'd suggest an oil and filter change first, if that doesn't work then it doesn't sound too good imo

20/50 oil is wrong for an automatic!

You need 10/40 and preferably it being MA2 spec oil.

If in any doubt ask Guessworks the Gearbox guru!

That still doesn't make it correct.  As I said speak to the gearbox expert Guessworks.

Normal Minis with a manual gearbox then yes 20W 50 and I would recommend (along with Swiftune) the Millers oils specifically designed for the Mini's combined engine and gearbox design that have EP additives in it to protect the gearbox to the correct GL4 specification.

If you  search the forums you will see the correct advise give is 10w/40 for auto boxes.  Advise given by such people by MRA who runs an engineering company which machines parts for the auto boxes who quote "Our latest recommendation for Automatic Mini is to use MA2 grade oils, these are specifically for wet clutch shared engine/transmission units and seem to work a lot better than the standard oils.  10W40 on ALL 1979 onwards auto's". and "I use a 10W40, MA2 (only MA2 is suitable for wet clutches) grade motorcycle oils in all my Automatic rebuilds now, simply cannot beat it, tests have been undertaken and the difference is very noticeable, less flare 3rd to 4th, more positive gear changes both up and down, much better driving experience.  NOTE 20W50 should never be used in an automatic Mini (or any other AP2 unit) as it will lead to damage."

Also check this thread about half way down for Guessworks advise quote "Don't put treacle ( oops 20/50 ) in an auto.... Use a decent 10/40 mineral and change regularily..."

Not wanting to start a war with you, I just want the correct and best advise out there.  I hope the above info is of use.

The clunk maybe an engine steady or engine mount.

According to BMC / Leyland / Rover and AP who manufactured the Gearboxes, the correct Oil is 10W40.

I have an auto, it is indeed 10w40, if in doubt just visit the automatic mini register. The friction materials were changed around 79, but it is still wise to use 10w40. My money is on the stabiliser bush rubbers.

Hi thanks for all your replys! They've been great! Are the stabiliser bush rubbers difficult to sort? I shell use 10/40 oil

If it isn't engine stabilisers it will be forward clutch pack damage... this will necessitate a full strip down to make the most of your money, simply because it will have damage elsewhere and also be full of crud

On;y use MA2 not MA or MA1 and if you choose to use a standard oil then not synthetic as its too slippery... MA2 has special modifiers to cope with this
