Conscious that this is a well trodden path, i'm looking for some reccomendations for 998 engine upgrades to make the cars work as a daily drive slightly more comfortable and economical. Motorway miles included.

Currently i am running with a standard a+ series block (1984) with a miniflow exhaust and electronic ignition being the only modifications. Its possibly worth mentioning that the head gasket has gone before and that my remedy was to have the head skimmed and then refitted. I've since had a misfire at idle despite retorqing the head, however its not particularly bothersome to be honest.

My thoughts were to upgrade the cam and replace the head as a first port of call. Is there anything in particular i need to bear in mind?

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Stage 1 tuning kit. A HS4 or HIF44 carb with possibly a K&N filter.
A Keith Calvert CST2007 12G295 stage 3 head.
SW5 cam.
If you want to spend a wee bit more a Keith Calver 1.4 rockers.

Depends what your after really. I would definitely get the head heavily ported. The standard inlet port size is a joke, and causes a huge restriction. I've got a 12g295 head, and have removed my standard, CAM4810, head, so had the opportunity to see the difference with my own eyes. Not only are the standard ports small, but the quickly taper inwards. O_O  :ohno: It's quite an expensive mod, but well worth the hassle/expense. If you want around 100BHP, I would be looking at 1275 turbo engines, for a reliable car that you can drive daily. Everyone wants a N/A race spec engine, but soon change their minds after a short while.

I'm currently modifying my 998.

Currently Bought.

Twin HS2 carbs

K&N pancake filters.

Maniflow inlet manifold

Maniflow cooper freeflow

Maniflow 1.75'' single box, side exit.

Need.

Modified cylinder head, or sort out my 12G295.

fit magasquirt for ignition only with a couple of sensors, inc lambda.

Kent 500 or 266 cam.

:shades:

I'll be happy with around 60 BHP. I want the car to be nice to drive. I'm sure it will sound fantastic with the mods I'm planning.

A decent stage one kit should be the first thing to consider. Head wise, if you're aiming for more of an improved daily driver rather than a very "hot" 998 you'll be better off having the standard head casting modified as the ports can be made a more suitable size for a mild road motor, giving better port velocities and more "punch" lower down.

Phil.
