The child in the family needs a new engine unfortunately, I was going down the 1275 route but been offered a low milage running 998 for a very very good price. So with that in mind I already know to put a different cam in but I don't know which one. I also have a 1275 head that I shall put on but what else can I do to up the power?

Thanks

A decent (Minispares) stage one kit is the first thing to fit. If it's a fairly budget road motor don't go wild on the cam, you're not looking for peak figures you want a decent spread of power. AC Dodd on here does a good range of cams, otherwise the 997 Cooper cam responds really well in the smallbore.
A properly ported 998 head with bigger valves will give more "punch" low down than the 1275 head, due to better port sizing.

Good to know, so I'd be better off with the 998 head but size valves are we talking? Also what about different carbs? I already have a stage 2 manifold and slight pipe for the car. Anything to consider for a better intake

You may see better peak figures with the 1275 head, but you'll lose out on torque low down. This is where a 998 head with a better port size will deliver, so better suited to a nippy road car.
I'm presuming it's for road use and not a race car ? Otherwise that changes everything ..
What's your budget to ?

Yeah it's a road car, I haven't really got a budget to be honest. It's an on going project. I don't mind spending a fair bit on the engine because I've already got a standard 998 on the road at the moment so after something more special. I'd be happy around the £500 mark but don't mind putting more in if it's worth the money

A 1275 head may also need to have pockets cut into the block as the valves overlap the edges of the bores ..
