Taken the mini out today. Was going really well. Once I had done about 10miles or so I noticed that if I suddenly pushed the throttle pedal straight to the floor I could see a puff of some kind of vapour in the mirror. If I slowly push the pedal down no vapour is visible. I had topped the dashpot oil up before leaving and i have just checked it and its completely gone. I had used 20w50. I think that the dashpot maybe raising too quickly but were would the oil have gone. Even if I top it up when stationary it seems to empty. The carb is a hif44.

Did you put too much in? The dashpot should only be filled to just below the cylinder where the piston pushes in and not to the very top, if you fill it ant more the oil will find it's way into the carb and burn off in the engine. If you can feel resistance as the piston is pushed back in then there should be enough oil in there.

What he said, you can safely remove the 3 screws holding the dash pot on and remove it to get a better understanding of how it works,. There's no gasket or sealant involved, but remove the plunger first & watch out for the piston & needle lifting off too. It's not a problem if it does, as long as you don't drop it.

You may find that the level will settle itself when it is happy, as long as there is oil in, then should be ok.

In the summer, I tend to use 20/50 as the weather is warmer and every thing is hot, and this seems to last a good time in between the odd top up.

Then for the winter, I go for 10/40 or even 3 in 1 in iced conditions

Do you have a servo?

If you have a little white smoke from the back, the servo seals may be leaking, so have a look at your brake fluid level as well. That,s the clue to that one.
