Hi All,

I'm thinking of changing my lock barrels (all three) to get back to one known key as the keys that came with the car are a bit vague to say the least :-)

How difficult is it to change the barrels?

With the door card off can I change the barrel without removing the handle or will the handle need to come of as well?

Any helpful advice or steps for a newbie would be much appreciated. Just spent quite a bit on worthwhile garage work so wanted to do this myself.

It's 1996 Cooper Spi

Thanks

A.

It's very easy really

1. take off the door card

2. undo the door handle screw that's reached from inside the door (careful not to drop the screw in the door)

3. undo the 4 screws on the door latch on the side of the door

4. undo the last remaining screw that you'll see once you've removed the door latch

5. take the door handle to a clean work space

6. undo the spire clip (I think it's called)

7. remove the small screw keeping the mechanism together

8. remove all the parts in the way of the barrel

9. insert key into the barrel then slide the barrel out (may need a little tap)

10. insert new key into new barrel and put that in the door handle

11. remove the key whilst holding the barrel in (this will stop the barrel from falling out)

12. re-assemble door handle making sure the spire clip is on well

I only done this a couple of months ago so that's a basic guide it's pretty easy but for the boot lid lock you'll need to knock out a pin rather than removing a spire clip

Hope this helps!

Hi Rocket,

That will be a great help - thank you.

One further question, when removing the door cards do I need to take of the door lock switch first or does this come away withe card? If it has to be removed how is this done?

Thanks

The card comes away without removing the lock you'll just need to remove the door furniture

Window winder is one screw
The door latch surround just comes off with a pull
And the pull handle is removed with two screws

Not exactly a cost effective fix

When it takes half an hour to replace the barrels

It would only take about half an hour longer than replacing the handles though, surely?
