I was told by a "Mechanic" that my 91 Mini Mayfair had Electronic Ignition. When I recently fitted a new cap + rotor (pot luck on E/bay) I found this,Click on pic.

Clearly this is a POINTS dizzy,but is it a LUCAS 25D4  or a LUCAS 45D4 ??Attached File  20170224_143406 DIZZY.jpg   70.18K   30 downloads

When did Mini's go over to Electronic Dizzies??

Also I bought My Mayfair 1991 998cc,it came with a 3 clock (in line with driver) dash with Jap tacho,I've since

fitted a 3 clock Centre Binnicle and kept the tacho on the parcel shelf.

Was wondering if this is a MAYFAIR Sport, or the basic model??

I believe that's a 59d4 dizzy. The white "cam" to the left of the photo allows the contact faces of the points to slide as the advance/retard back plate moves. This was meant to clean the contact faces.

Cheers, Steve.

That's a 54D4, more or less interchangable with a 45D4, mainly the drive dog that's different.

I'm not 100% certain, but I don't think the 998's ever got an electronic distributor from the factory.

If your mechanic actually looked at the distributor and said you have electronic, time to change your mechanic. I've not seen a 998 personally with a O.E electronic distributor only that age 1275s

I don't think he even bothered because when I dropped the car off at his garage I said I'd like a service ...oil + filters,Plugs points, cap + rotor...needless to say car won't be seeing him anytime soon.

Still non the wiser on what DIZZY it is ...???

There's a model number stamped on the side of the body.

59D4.

As said it's almost the same as a 45, most bits are interchangeable . The wiper points are intended to increase the service interval for the A+ engine, so they also have an A+ clamp.

There's also and electronic version, 59DM4 that was used on the Maestro and early Metty Turbos, but never on the Mini or other Metros - they had the 65DM4 if they were electronic.
