Cannot select 3rd 4th and reverse with my 850 engine out of car.Is it possible that when it is in the car with engine running that it will be ok. ray

Probably not. It will help to find the right answer if you could give some more details. Which type of gearchange, and clutch, for instance.

It's not unusual to have to rotate things a bit before engaging gears on a stationary engine. Try turning the motor a bit while you shift.
