Quick question and might be a daft one :P I have a set of SSR mesh wheels I want to refurb myself. I have all the nuts/bolts out but the faces are not budging! I've let all of the air out of the tyres, but will I have to have the tyres completely removed before splitting them? I've been told that this particular wheel are made as three piece, but then they weld the barrels together at the factory, so a two piece really.

Cheers

The way I used to do split rims was to take the tyres off, strip the rims of any valves wheel weights etc. Then stick them in the oven for a bit before trying to split them.

Are you sure the centres come out? I remember reading about some of the old school jap wheels being essentially one piece, as the lips/barrels being welded together with the centres and the bolts just for show

Get some pictures up, I want to see them  ;D  :D

I'm not too sure to be honest Will. I've also read about the barrels/lips being welded together on these, but probably is like you say then and are in fact a one piece structure rim with the faces welded too. Boooo :P would have been so much easier to refurb with the faces removed.

Karl, I'll bring one over tomorrow to show you.

Thanks chaps

Most are glued or sealed. For obvious reasons. They can be difficult to seperate.

I've had two sets of Force splits in the past and completely built them up and taken apart a few times, but they were the Exacton converted rims so easy to do as you can just pull and wiggle the lips off with the air out of the tyres.
By the looks of my SSRs, well to me anyway, it doesn't look as though anything is stopping the faces from coming away once all the bolts are out. Like you say though Steve, probably well stuck on and might have never been split prior to me getting them making it even harder without giving them a bloody good whack from behind

Anyway you can see the construction in the pics below

Who else thinks a harder whack on the back of the faces will nudge them off?

Also on the last picture, that's the back of the faces and that's not weld, they're little tabs.

If they're glued they'll need a good amount of heat .

Forgot to update this. They are indeed proper 2 piece rims.
