Hi,
I am looking for a replacement steering wheel for my 1982 HLE 1000.

I'd like a Moto Lita style probably Brown Wood or leather rim and and round holes in the spokes.

Any recommended sources / suppliers.

Any technical advice to ensure I get something that will fit. Do I need anything to fit it.

Thanks

Most steering wheels are sold separately to the boss. So you need a boss to suit the mini and a wheel to suit the boss.
Have a look on the mini spares website or mini sport if your a fan of them. Being mini related sites they tend to sell stuff to suit minis :-)

Yep those where the days,When I got my first Mini (van) I drove it down to L/pool city centre,to a small motor factors. Got a new fangled radio/cassette, Colonel Bogey air horns with tow way switch(factory beep or C.Bogey Air),Astrali s/wheel + boss, and 2x clip on overtaking/peep mirrors. All fitted while I had a walk around town, and grabbed a Wimpy!!,

Cost me a fortune tho, not a lot of change back from £60 sqids....(rip off) :gimme:  :D

I would advise a leather rim wheel over wood every time. Far more comfortable.

Wood rim will be fine if you wear leather palm / string backed driving gloves !

I had a look at Wood and Picket, they have some well priced copies but after looking at Mini Spares I do like their Three Spoke Leather one that comes with a MiniSpares boss, for less than £100 notes.

Black leather would also go better with my interior.

Back in the '60's there were some  wood-rimmed steering wheels sold where the aluminium was not in the form of a complete ring. There were just 3 aluminium spokes and the circular part was all wood. A friend of mine had one in his Cooper 'S' and when he had an accident, the rim of the steering wheel snapped and a spoke stuck into him. It was not pretty and he was in hospital as a result.

I'm sure all wood-rimmed wheels now sold have a continuous ring of metal, but if a 'period' steering wheel is bought just check this out.

That does look superb - but not sure if I'll be allowed to spend that much on a steering wheel :-(

Mountney do some that are a lot cheaper than Mota Lita. Obviously not such nice quality but acceptable. Got mine from a boot sale for a fiver!

I wish!!
Just ordered a Mountney polished metal and leather from MiniSpares with a boss and chrome billet cover.
Cost about £93 all in.
