I've loosed the bolt and unscrewed the square bolt underneath, so the tightener wheel is no longer in play. Now how do I get the belt off? It doesn't just slide off like I hoped. The belt is slack, just not enough to slip it off

You fitting a new belt? Cut it off.

Are you sure the tensioner is wound all the way to its full stop at the end of its play? I've never had them that tight in the past! Just wondering if the belt on there at the moment is the right one!

If the belt has never been changed and even if it has the threads on the tensioner mechanism may be rusty, preventing it from unscrewing the belt tensioner completely.

I have found that using a hex wrench in the alternator pulley end to turn it while encouraging the belt to move over has helped get a belt on or off.
