Heater Know Problems

1. 1994 

2. Rover Mini 35

3. So my heater switches on and gives nice warm air as well as the windscreen heater works too HOWEVER the pull out cable know does not budge, does anyone know where to look to find the problem?

I've just checked the valve and it does more freely however the knob inside doesn't move, do I conclude it's the cable? The valve I have looks like this one:

Also I was thinking that my 1994 Mini CARB should not have the valve inline because I thought that was only on the later SPI and MPI versions?

probably the cable then, bit of a pain to change. I wouldn't worry, they had the cross over point where they used different parts on carb and spillages etc.

My 89 carbed car has that valve too......I also think it's your cable.

I have a 1994 carb mini and the valve is the same as yours.

 

On mine you have to twist the knob as well as pull or push.

I have a 1994 carb mini and the valve is the same as yours.
 
On mine you have to twist the knob as well as pull or push.


Mine pulls then twists to lock, as per the older type choke cables

That valve was fitted from the late 80s up until the MPIs.  The knob is in for cold, and out for hot.  Only earlier Minis needed a twist on either the choke or heater cable.

 

On my current Mini (a 1990) and my previous (a 1994) the cable is insufficient to push the valve closed, because the valve is too stiff for it.  Using my finger to move the valve manually under the bonnet works.

 

I see the valve is unavailable, and has been for a while... hopefully whoever is making them next, makes them good quality!

 

Its really annoying because "back in the day" when i drove these cars when they were new, I never had a problem.  The knob always worked - push in for cold, out for roasting hot.

My early van had only a well-made brass valve on the head, so no control from the dashboard. It was always adequately hot, sometimes too hot. The two later ones had reliable cable operated valves and again gave plenty of heat and did not leak.

Sad that we can't get basic bits like heater valves that work properly any more, except by trying something made for a different car.
