I have a 1994 Tahiti that i am rebuilding the calipers for. They are AP lockheed for 8.4 inch discs. Problem is... we ordered a seal kit for 8.4 inch disc calipers and when we put them in we found that they would tear when we put the piston in. I was wondering if my calipers needed any special type of seals? Thanks

This is the kit you should have - http://www.minispare...|Back to search

Have you lubricated the seals and piston bores with either new/fresh brake fluid or alternatively red rubber grease. The outer seals are usually the more difficult to install. I'm no expert by any means but that is the way I would go.

Where did you get the seals from? Did you lubricate them as suggested above?

You should buy safety critical parts from reputable sources. As above I've always bought from minispares and used red grease;no issues.

OK Caliper Repair Wizards .... advice sought.....
MPI 1999 standard  8.4" front disks.
I'm (trying) to overhaul the calipers using a minispares kit.
Lucky for me the outer seals popped in no problem.
New pistons, and the Inner seals have all ripped on me..!!   Yes plenty of red rubber grease and brake fluid..
Now I'm no stranger to doing calipers - over the decades I've done bikes/cars .
Yes they are all stiff to get in , but these b_ggers, need so much 'encouragement' that the lower lip of the seal gets sliced off..!
You can tell by the beautiful slither the piston is going in straight....

Are there any alternative seals I should try... any recomendations welcome.

atb Jon..

I'm wondering if you had the seals mixed up ?

The Dust Wiper is a double lip 'seal' and the Main Seal for the Piston has a plain square face.

I lube the entire seal with rubber grease, the face, back and sides when fitting them in, they don't need much, just a lick. This helps the seal move in it's groove and find it's home.
