Hey guys,

I've just had my new project delivered, a rolling 1963 shell (in need of a lot of work) and a few boxes of bits. I need to order a new floor assembly from mini machine, but to make sure I get the right one I need to work out the gear change type that I'm going to be using...

Am I right in thinking that it would originally had a magic wand gearbox? It's got the hole in the floor so I'm assuming so. I'm going to be putting a 1293/1380 into the car, so I'm guessing I might be better off modifying the replacement floor assembly I buy to have the later rod gearchange mounting? I did see Guessworks hybrid box but it's another chunk of money I don't really have, and I'm not too fussed about it being 100% as it came out of the factory so don't mind modifying the transmission tunnel if needs be...

Help?!

Cheers,

Dom

As you are changing the floor its your choice. As for the engine personally I'd get the bores measured then see what the next overbore is but the maximum you want for a road engine is 1330, as its more expensive to resleeve a 1380 to 1275 than a 1330 to 1275 cc

Just my 2p

Cheers! Yeah that'll be a whole other topic, probably in about 18 months time - but I think 1330cc is what I'll go for and what a few people have advised, thanks :)

Dom,

If you're not keeping the 'magic wand' then you have two 'standard' options for the gearchange:

- alloy remote, used 1961-1973(ish)

- rod change, 1973 and later

The alloy remote should use earlier floorpan, the rod type should use later.

If you're wanting to keep a '63 car in period style then the alloy remote is the one to go for. The advantage of this is much better location of the engine - it only needs the single stabiliser bar to the bulkhead even with quite a highly tuned motor for road use.

Carbon that's massively helpful, thank you so much. So just to make sure I'm clear, the mk1 floor assembly should allow for the use of the remote change gearbox? Is that why there are blanking plates for the magic wand gearbox, so that the same floorplan can be used for either magic wand or remote?

Cheers!

Dom

ETA: Scrub that, just seen the remote tunnel has the hole for the remote change and the magic wand type doesn't. Only issue is that the remote tunnels don't seem to have a hole for the starter button?

Also the floor starter has some kind of box over it which I haven't seen before...though it looks very well made - any ideas?!

If you are going to fit a remote or rod change then go for the mk1 cooper spec floor as it will have the correct hole for the gearbox and be correct for the car, you can fit a rod box to remote floor but need to fabricate a bracket, pretty sure there is some info on mk1 forum from someone who did this. I wouldn't fit a rod change floor in a mk1,
The box over floor start is a new one on me, must have been done for a reason, if you are keeping the floor start then you need to modify exhaust as when I did my mk1 the new exhaust from mini spares didn't fit without shorting the switch, I could have modified it but a nos early mk1 exhaust turned up so I bought that.

Ahh that's great thanks Daz (sorry, off to reply to your PM too!) - I've just seen that you can buy the adapter brackets too, so that floor seems to tick all the boxes apart from the floor mounted starter mounting, but I guess that wouldn't be too hard to make something up for it.

Appreciate it - thanks everyone :)

The floor mounted starter button is simply a small hole in the floor - mk1 floor pressings have a 'bulge' for it already.

Ah ok great, nice and easy then - do the mk1 floors for the remote box hole also have the bulge for it?

Cheers,

Yes - all mk1 floors have the bulge (except for very early ones - pre 1960 IIRC)
