I tried refitting refurbished rear subframe back into mini this afternoon and have a little problem. The width of the subframe or to be more precise the width from outside surface of the trunnion bolt to the other seems to be wider than the gap between the guards where they fit. Do I need to really over tighten the bolts which would compress the rubber bushes or are there trunnion bolts that have a thinner head. I'm only talking a couple of millimetres either side.Attached File  IMG_0050.JPG   54.62K   37 downloads

Which way round have you got the top hat bushes on the trunnions? Photos would help

I wouldn't over tighten, you'll risk damaging the thread and in any case it will have little effect as the amount by which the rubbers compress is preset as the pins can only be tightened until they bottom out on the subframe and then go no further (make sure this is happening otherwise you may not be tightening enough). Presumably you didn't have a problem before?

What exactly has been refurbished and have there been any heelboard repairs?

Problem sorted, found the old trunnion bolts( never throw anything away ) as you can see in the pic the head thickness is maybe 2mm thicker on the new ones, not much but just enough to give me the clearance. Off to find a friend with a lathe.

Are they in too bad condition? I would clean up and reuse the originals personally

From your first photo, it just simply didn't look tight enough.

The Trunnion Bolt has a should just where the thread finished. The have to be done up hard so that shoulder seats against the subframe. The rubbers will compress and bulge a bit.

Putting the head thickness to one side, are the shank lengths exactly the same? As if so the head thickness is irrelevant.

Thankyou  moke spider, i was just being a little to soft on the tightening side, i put a little muscle into it and tighten them until bolt shaft stopped on the inside part of subframe. All holes now line up and i have a small amount of clearance between trunnion head and guards.
