On the way back from Brooklands I pulled over and switched off, like the responsible citizen I am, to take a phone call. Attempting to start..... nothing. Bump started ok and got home no problem. Still won't turn over on the key, nor on the push button solenoid under the bonnet (not even a click), but if i pull back the rubbers and bridge the main cables it does. Does this mean the solenoid is at fault? There is no ignition light coming on either, though the voltmeter on the dash shows good charge, and lights etc all work fine. It's a Mk1 998 Mini with inertia starter and dynamo, separate regulator.

Anyone? Don't want to order a new one if the issue is obviously something else. Electrics are not my strong point!

Check that the solenoid is getting 12V when the key is turned to start (the thin wire on the solenoid that energises it). If it is, and the battery is charged as it sounds like it is, then sounds like the solenoid. If you don't have a multimeter you could always get a short length of wire to short from the battery terminal on the solenoid to the spade that the thin wire connects to.

Thanks for that will check in the morning. Solenoid is not that old so wanted to be sure before buying another one.
