Evening all,

I spent the day wiring up an air horn kit that I got a while ago, but I'm a little disappointed in the volume, as it is no-where near as loud as I was expecting. In fact it's probably no louder then the standard horn! Is this normal?

This is the kit I have ---> http://www.carbuilde...uence-air-horns

Is there anything I can do to make them louder? Different horns? More powerful compressor? Or is this just how they're supposed to be?

Cheers in advance

Chris

Did you wire it via relay?

I've not bothered with Air Horns for many years now as I felt their performance wasn't brilliant without some considerable changes.

Like yourself, I felt they weren't overly loud and also found the delay in them making a sound a bother too.

I did try a few things, though, what was around in those days, didn't allow for a practical solution, though these days, I think it could be done with off the shelf bits.

What I found to make them louder was they needed more Air Volume (cfm) and a small increase in the pressure.

I think a 'practical' solution would be to have a small on board compressor, with around 25 PSI and an Air Reservoir at pressure. A Solenoid Valve could then be installed between the Air Reservoir and the Horns.

It would be costly and take up some space, but that's one solution.

These days, (and for a long time now) I just have some after market Twin Hi-Lo Tone Electric Horns, via  Relay. Don't take up much space and very loud. Inexpensive too.

Not the best set up. The twins that come on together are OK.

But check your electrical connections.

Yep, wired with a relay and a push button switch.

Ok thanks for the help guys, doesn't sound good...

As it's been an arse ache to get everything wired up and make brackets (and I don't really want to rip it all out again), is there anything on the market that you could suggest as a better alternative that would be a basic swap with my settup? I'm thinking some some sort of 'compressor + horns' kit like the one i've got, but more substantial, or better quality. If that makes any sense at all... Just so all my effort so far hasn't been in vein.

Cheers again chaps!

Oh dear, I think you've put your horn in the wrong place by the sounds of it :D

I've got a nautilus style horn on mine and are louder than the dual air horns I had before them :)
