My wife vacuumed under the seat and now the airbag light has come on. I have had a look for loose cables and all seems fine but the light will not go out now. Please could someone help me to reset it on the dash.

It resets itself when the fault goes away. I'd check it all again! Which seat was it?

Probably the under seat connectors, common problem on loads of cars.

Being under the seat/on the floor the connectors get wet/damp, corrode or just get knocked around.

Clean the contacts up, check they connect properly, check no wires have been ripped out.

If all else fails lots of people chop the connectors off and solder the wires together.

Don't forget when working on the airbag system to disconnect the battery and leave it for 30 mins or so to ensure nothing fires off!!

This exact same thing happened to mine, gave a lift to a friend, who adjusted the seat, pulled the cable under the seat by mistake, airbag light came on,reset would not work, neither would battery off for 30 mins, the cable goes straight to the battery in the boot,in the middle it has some kind of resister...took it to BMW.....new loom needed..£700... Sold it instead with the fault, just explained before it was sold to the buyer...

The airbag system will use a separate controller unit so it's unlikely doing an ECU reset will help (because you'd be resetting the ECU not the airbag controller).

Usually for small things once you sort the issue the system resets on it's own, or disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes will do the same job.

Otherwise you need the dealer level software to talk to the airbag control unit.
