So I am working on getting a Mini running that I got for a good price...or so I thought.

The solenoid isn't wired up and all the wiring is non-standard - see attached photos. I connected the starter to the left lug and the battery/alternator to the right lug. The purple wire is connected to the bottom of the solenoid and runs to what I assume is a starter relay? There is a blue wire that is connected to the top of the solenoid and runs to nowhere. There is no white/red wire in the loom for the solenoid trigger.

The wiring in this thing is a nightmare. It took me a few days to get the lights sorted. I don't have time to get a new harness because I have to ship the car out soon.

Thanks in advance for the help. Sorry for the terrible pics.

The starter is an inertia type.

After studying the wiring diagram - I am pretty sure my "blue" equals the "white/yellow" and should go to the hot side of the coil. My "purple" is the same as the "white/red."

that relay is not needed. it is something someone has added at a later date.

a solenoid is just a big relay. power and all supply wire attach to one side. starter big cable to the other. the terminal in the middle trigger the solenoid to switch. it is earthed through its body.

I would remove the relay and wire it up correctly.

I was thinking of removing the relay before I read your response. What is the most effective way to find my incoming wire from the ignition? Using a multimeter - have someone turn the key off/on and look for state changes?
