Well it was my mate who fitted it!

He got the switched live from a cable behind the speedo clocks, it was a cable that wasnt actually attached to anything, and we didnt have a working voltmeter so it was pure luck (or not!) that we found this switched live!

We had removed the clocks and unplugged everything, then once we got the stereo working, we re-connected everything and put the clocks back in.

Went for a test drive, and the speedo wasnt working

Had a look behind the clocks, and the big speedo cable was unplugged! So plugged it back in and expected it to work, but it didnt!


So is it possible that we've not re-connected it properly? Or have we attached the switched live (for the stereo) onto something that we shouldnt have??

double check u plugged the cable back in properly, they only seem to fit in one way and they have to lock into place, can be a bugger to get in sometimes, your dormant wire shouldnt cause it to stop, unless it was labeled
"attatching this wire to anything will cause your clocks to stop working"

which i doubt, only kidding

just double check your cable at both ends of poss! although gearbox end u have to have childlike arms to get in there!

Check that the inner of the cable hasn't pulled out some when it was disconnected. Remove it again and check that the inner is pushed fully home into the outer (and hence the gearbox) before refitting it and as above make sure it's properly plugged in.

What colour was the wire you used? It's probably the tacho feed. As such it's not really ideal for putting a large load like a stereo onto.

Phew, it just needed connecting more firmly!

I can't remember the colour of the wires that we used for the swithced live, I think they might have been green/orange/brown maybe?
We wired it into the fusebox for a switched live but it (the stereo) didnt work when we did that

Will probably take it to an auto-electrician to get it done properly, I wont have enough time for another couple weeks now...

Yup, I printed out the guide etc but without the aid of a voltmeter we couldnt find a switched earth

Earth, is earth, it not switched.

All you need is..
Red - Switched Live goes off to no2 on the fuse box with the green wire, 35amp and only live with the ignition switched to position II.

Yellow - Permanent live goes off to the starter motor solenoid, permanent live from battery; power cable should be fitted with a 5amp fuse.

Black - Ground goes to car body.
