i've already fit one to the front of my 74, and it seems to fit ok, but i've no idea which version it is, and i've only today realised there are two different types?! i've seen some small photos of both online but they look very similar if not the same on the pics....

what are the differences and what kind of ****-storm have i let myself in for if i have the later one on my 74??

thanks in advance!

Post '76 the front subframe was rubber mounted. So the panel is different around the area of the front mounts to accommodate the teardrop rubber mounting.

hmmm ok, now you say that i can see there is actually a gap between the front panel and the subframe where i think it mounted directly before....

is it as simple as just fitting the teardrop rubbers in-between the gap and job done?!

No! Or maybe yes! Depends on what mounts you have fitted elsewhere. You must use a full set of rubbers or a full set of solid mounts, no mixing, or structural cracking will occur. So just match what you have on the towers and toeboard.

Personally I would go solid on all the mounts. Major handling improvement for small outlay is alwats good. Some jiggery-pokery (highly scientfic term!) is needed because your front panel is a mismatch to the subframe and neither a solid mount kit nor a teardrop will fit, probably. But fret not. At the front simple large diameter spacers might do, or a stack of large diameter washers (35 mm or thereabouts) and I think you need to redrill the bolt holes to line up. Not too drastic.

Remember that you will need stiffening plates on the toeboard if you do decide to go all solid. Again, not drastic and it has been discussed here many times.

Have fun!

jiggery pokery I can handle....!!

the subframe hasn't been out at all yet so its all standard as far as i know. i need to remove it to refurb it anyway so replacing all mounts with solid/rubber is not really a major problem right now.

i assume it was solid as original, and therefore the toeboard may already be adequately stiffened?

As you say your car is a 74 which is a twin bolt front subframe then your car will be solidly mounted. If i was you i would use some of DSN's billet alloy spacers at the front.

When you say space though how much of a gap?? if its a few mm then shim it, if its 1/2" then you will need a solid mount.

The subframe mounts differently on the toe board compared to a rubber mounted subframe. Your gamble but i would fit a solid mount at the front.

yes my thoughts are to go with a full set of solid mounts once i get my head around what i actually need. i thust meant that the toe board would already be strong enough to take solid mounts without any additional strengthening

cant remember exactly but the image in my head (not been at workshop for a few days) tells me its more than a couple of mm or i wouldn't have noticed there was a gap.

.....so in my head, i can use all original solid fixings as it was, and just add a solid/alloy spacer and fiddle with the holes to line them up at the front mount points, and happy days?(sort of) or is there a proper 'solid mount' kit for the front i should be using? obviously i don't want to just bodge if theres a proper solution

If your clubman is 74 and the change came in 76 then the chances are it's a solid mounted subframe anyway. Just shim out the front mountings.
Lift the bonnet and see if there is the single big bolt- rubber mounting, or twin studs/bolts - solid mounting.

its defo twin bolt so solid mounted as original from the information i've gathered from the experts on here so far! seems I can just shim the front and leave them all solid  as they were and all is well with the world once more... haha

On a little side note here, all clubmans before 74 are twin bolt front subframe, no single bolt whatsoever?

We all forgot that 1976 saw the introduction of the Mark IV when everything became rubber mounted.

Yes basically is the answer here.
