Morning all,
I'm considering buying a secondhand engine, it has an issue, but not one I can put my finger on.
Advice sort before the purchase please.
This is the blurb from the ad
"The engine pissed out a bit of coolant when ever I turned the car on but not a huge amount. It was suggested that it could be a crack in the head or head gasket. Had good even compression when taken out 6 months ago."

I thought maybe bypass hose, and once the thermostat opened the problem went away.....? Maybe maybe?
Or as he says, as simple as a headgasket.
Thanks
Chris

"Pissed out a bit of coolant"

From where?

If it's somewhere around the the head gasket line,, It could be a head gasket, it could also have a gouge in the deck of the block.

There are many alternatives and if you are going to buy it as it is, you need to allow for a major re-build as a worst case scenario. Of course, it could be something very simple, but without more info it is impossible to say. Take no notice of what the vendor says!

Sounds like radiator overflow as once the key is turned off the water heats up more, expands, and has to go somewhere, unless it has an expansion tank.

If it's doing it from cold the pressure to eject the water can only come from a compressing cylinder. Alternatively, could it be leaking slowly and collecting somewhere to be shaken off at start up? If it's out and a non runner the best you can do is a leak down test and/or be sure the price is acceptable for the worst case scenario.

Well he wants $100 for it, your money £55.
I'm buying for the wife, she wants a project engine for a bit of fun.
Didn't want to buy a complete lemon, eg block flogged.

At that price I would be inclined to take the risk.

If it's a 1275 snap it up.

If it's a 998 - I'm sick of tripping over them, you're welcome to take one for 'free', but the cost will be that you have to take another.

It's an 1100. I prefer a well setup 1100 over a 1275 to be fair......for an everyday driver.
