Yo,

ok bit werid but your all a bit handery with the spanner and problem solving that me. i just go for it and make a bit of a hash of things from time to time. Anyway my question is about my mate fred's dad moto guzzi bike. the bikes an old thing but still rather nice. couldn't tell you the model or year but its got a V style engive but mounted at 90* degrees to the bike so the pistons stick outwards.

anyway. heres the problem. i went to fred's today and we had a fiddle with the bike. its got new spark plugs in and its just been cleaned every now and then. the problem is it will not start. turns over fine but it won't start........UNLESS you use the old spark plugs but even then it only runs for 30 odd secs then dies again.

So i was wondering if anyone had an idea on what the problem might be?

Cheers if you can help.

New spark plugs don't necessarily work.

Does it run + cut out instantly or slooowly die (like stalling)

Cutting out, start looking for fueling and ignition issues, stalling, take off the exhaust and try it.

yeah it just dieds fairly sharpish. i know its getting fuel possably too much as we fiddle with the carb (its a weird piston thingy not a butterfly valve sort like SU carbs). what bit of the ignition system to look at tho? the whole thing.

Old petrol?

You sure you got the correct new spark plugs?

yeah petrol is a bit old. but it dose start with the old spark plugs. which when i got there had been left outside for a few weeks and had to be cleaned. thought it could have been the gap on the new ones. so tweaked it to a rought scale (no tools with me) as the gap was fairly big. still nothing.

I'd say try with new petrol, properly gapped spark plugs and see how that goes, other than that I'm not sure as I'm only drawing on my experience of cars!
