Best Answer greenmini1275 , 06 April 2017 - 01:52 PM

Mini is sorted and is actually running really nicely, perhaps it did need to blow through some gunk.

Cheers Guys. Go to the full post

I just put diesel in my Mini. It ran for half a mile before sputtering to a halt. Now getting the diesel out of the tank isn't a problem. The problem is what is this going to do to my engine?

Oh and I was half asleep, my other car is a diesel and I was working on auto. Lol.

Drain tank, fuel lines and float chamber of carb.  Take plugs out and wash in petrol, dry and replace. Put petrol in.  Start.

Might run a little rough for a few miles.

Did you not struggle to get the Diesel nozzle in the filler neck?

Cool, cheers for that. Glad it won't break anything.

Not at all.

A minis filler neck is massive compared to modern petrol cars.

What age is it?

Dad filled his mini up with diesel on the way home from L2B last year, then topped it off with 2 gallons of petrol when he realised what he'd done. I reckon the ratio was 1:3 petrol to diesel. He drove it all the way home (about 120 miles) on pretty much full choke as that was the only way it would run, and gradually drove it more and more til it ran right and seemed like all diesel was out of the system. Still going strong now, probably helped clean all the gunk out of the engine and head

The engine is a 1994 SPI converted to a HIF44, the car is a 1991 Mayfair.

You're lucky it's converted, the SPI system wouldn't like that at all  >_<

So no cat?

It might foul the plugs and be a bit smokey but it should be ok.

It's much worse the other way around, the diesel often lubricates the fuel pump and petrol doesn't. Petrol also burns a lot hotter

yeah as above get fuel through and get it started, main problem will be oiled up plugs, give them a clean and maybe warm them up with a blow torch or in the oven. get as much derv out as yu can and then brim the tank to dilute it as much as you can.

also once youve cleared it, it will be an idea to change the plugs.

Well I have completely drained the tank. Cleaned the plugs. Need to go to the petrol station and get some fuel, hopefully that'll sort it.

I'll let you know, in a bit, need to have a bath and thoroughly scrub my teeth, phaaaaa.

I'd be changing the fuel filter as well.
